Society & Skateboarding

On a recent trip to Singapore, while getting off the train station we walk out and we see this huge “No Skateboarding” sign at the exit. Just as we were joking about the sign, right at the station’s exit we were welcomed by a public skate park tucked in an area by busy streets – Orchard and Somerset. Generally, skateboarding is discouraged in most areas in Singapore because of all the people walking around. What’s awesome about it is that the government recognizes the importance of skateboarding and how it’s become a big part of the urban lifestyle today. Just looking at them skate made us hope that one day the Philippine government would build more parks and playgrounds for the people. It’s a shame how the larger corporations own and maintain the major financial districts and in Cebu, skateboarding is prohibited in the empty streets of the business parks yet cars can freely move. Which could be the bigger accident?
Cebu City needs a decent skatepark. Skateboarding is a sport and a lifestyle, it’s no different from basketball and people have to understand that. The sooner they do, the better society will be.
